POEM OF THE WEEK

What Kind of Times Are These

Segment By: Yousra Oukassi, 11th grade

Adrienne Rich's Poetic Transformations | The New Yorker

There's a place between two stands of trees where the grass grows uphill
and the old revolutionary road breaks off into shadows
near a meeting-house abandoned by the persecuted
who disappeared into those shadows.

I've walked there picking mushrooms at the edge of dread, but don't be fooled
this isn't a Russian poem, this is not somewhere else but here,
our country moving closer to its own truth and dread,
its own ways of making people disappear.

I won't tell you where the place is, the dark mesh of the woods
meeting the unmarked strip of light—
ghost-ridden crossroads, leafmold paradise:
I know already who wants to buy it, sell it, make it disappear.

And I won't tell you where it is, so why do I tell you
anything? Because you still listen, because in times like these
to have you listen at all, it's necessary
to talk about trees.

POEM OF THE WEEK

You, Therefore

Segment By: Yousra Oukassi, 11th grade

You Also, Nightingale by Reginald Shepherd | Poetry Foundation
You are like me, you will die too, but not today:
you, incommensurate, therefore the hours shine:
if I say to you “To you I say,” you have not been
set to music, or broadcast live on the ghost
radio, may never be an oil painting or
Old Master’s charcoal sketch: you are
a concordance of person, number, voice,
and place, strawberries spread through your name
as if it were budding shrubs, how you remind me
of some spring, the waters as cool and clear
(late rain clings to your leaves, shaken by light wind),
which is where you occur in grassy moonlight:
and you are a lily, an aster, white trillium
or viburnum, by all rights mine, white star
in the meadow sky, the snow still arriving
from its earthwards journeys, here where there is
no snow (I dreamed the snow was you,
when there was snow), you are my right,
have come to be my night (your body takes on
the dimensions of sleep, the shape of sleep
becomes you): and you fall from the sky
with several flowers, words spill from your mouth
in waves, your lips taste like the sea, salt-sweet (trees
and seas have flown away, I call it
loving you): home is nowhere, therefore
you,
a kind of dwell and welcome, song after all,
and free of any eden we can name.

POEM OF THE WEEK

Earth, You Have Returned to Me

Segment By: Yousra Oukassi, 11th grade
Can you imagine waking up
every morning on a different planet,
each with its own gravity?

Slogging, wobbling,
wavering. Atilt
and out-of-sync
with all that moves
and doesn’t.

Through years of trial
and mostly error
did I study this unsteady way —

changing pills, adjusting the dosage,
never settling.

A long time we were separate,
O Earth,
but now you have returned to me.

POEM OF THE WEEK

Year’s End

Segment By: Yousra Oukassi, 11th grade
Now winter downs the dying of the year,
And night is all a settlement of snow;
From the soft street the rooms of houses show
A gathered light, a shapen atmosphere,
Like frozen-over lakes whose ice is thin
And still allows some stirring down within.

I’ve known the wind by water banks to shake
The late leaves down, which frozen where they fell
And held in ice as dancers in a spell
Fluttered all winter long into a lake;
Graved on the dark in gestures of descent,
They seemed their own most perfect monument.

There was perfection in the death of ferns
Which laid their fragile cheeks against the stone
A million years. Great mammoths overthrown
Composedly have made their long sojourns,
Like palaces of patience, in the gray
And changeless lands of ice. And at Pompeii

The little dog lay curled and did not rise
But slept the deeper as the ashes rose
And found the people incomplete, and froze
The random hands, the loose unready eyes
Of men expecting yet another sun
To do the shapely thing they had not done.

These sudden ends of time must give us pause.
We fray into the future, rarely wrought
Save in the tapestries of afterthought.
More time, more time. Barrages of applause
Come muffled from a buried radio.
The New-year bells are wrangling with the snow.

POEM OF THE WEEK

Little Tree

Segment By: Yousra Oukassi, 11th grade

E. E. Cummings

little tree
little silent Christmas tree
you are so little
you are more like a flower

who found you in the green forest
and were you very sorry to come away?
see i will comfort you
because you smell so sweetly

i will kiss your cool bark
and hug you safe and tight
just as your mother would,
only don’t be afraid

look the spangles
that sleep all the year in a dark box
dreaming of being taken out and allowed to shine,
the balls the chains red and gold the fluffy threads,

put up your little arms
and i’ll give them all to you to hold.
every finger shall have its ring
and there won’t be a single place dark or unhappy

then when you’re quite dressed
you’ll stand in the window for everyone to see
and how they’ll stare!
oh but you’ll be very proud

and my little sister and i will take hands
and looking up at our beautiful tree
we’ll dance and sing
“Noel Noel”

POEM OF THE WEEK

White-Eyes

Segment By: Yousra Oukassi, 11th grade
In winter
all the singing is in
the tops of the trees
where the wind-bird

with its white eyes
shoves and pushes
among the branches.
Like any of us

he wants to go to sleep,
but he's restless—
he has an idea,
and slowly it unfolds

from under his beating wings
as long as he stays awake.
But his big, round music, after all,
is too breathy to last.

So, it's over.
In the pine-crown
he makes his nest,
he's done all he can.

I don't know the name of this bird,
I only imagine his glittering beak
tucked in a white wing
while the clouds—

which he has summoned
from the north—
which he has taught
to be mild, and silent—

thicken, and begin to fall
into the world below
like stars, or the feathers
of some unimaginable bird

that loves us,
that is asleep now, and silent—
that has turned itself
into snow.

Missed Time

Segment By: Yousra Oukassi, 11th grade
My notebook has remained blank for months
thanks to the light you shower
around me. I have no use
for my pen, which lies
languorously without grief.

Nothing is better than to live
a storyless life that needs
no writing for meaning—
when I am gone, let others say
they lost a happy man,
though no one can tell how happy I was.

Poem of the week

final autumn

Segment By: Yousra Oukassi, 11th grade
Maple leaves turn black in the courtyard.
Light drives lower and one bluejay crams
our cold memories out past the sun,

each time your traces come past the shadows
and visit under my looking-glass fingers
that lift and block out the sun.

Come—I’ll trace you one final autumn,
and you can trace your last homecoming
into the snow or the sun.

Ant-man and the Wasp: the Quantumania

By George Cohen

The trailer for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, directed by Peyton Reed, dropped on the 25th of October, and with it brought many questions regarding the future of a fan favorite in the MCU. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania will be the newest film addition to the Ant-Man trilogy. It is set to center around Scott Lang, played by Paul Rudd, as he explores the Quantum Realm, a dimension that was revealed in Ant-Man and The Wasp through the use of Pym Particles. The film will see a recurrence of characters such as the Van Dyne family who worked with Scott in the previous films, and Cassie Lang, Scott’s daughter. There will also be more characters introduced such as Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors, who will serve as the main antagonist in this film.

With Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania being the third installment to Scott’s trilogy, many fans are worried for this character as Marvel has a habit of making characters lose something important to them in their third movie. In Iron Man 3, Tony Stark lost his arc reactor that protected his heart and powered his suits. In Captain America: Civil War, Steve Rogers lost his shield. One of the most heartbreaking losses from a third installation would have to be Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where he essentially lost his whole life as Peter Parker. Now, with the release of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, fans are speculating that Scott will lose something even worse than an arc reactor or shield. Ever since it was released that Kang will be the main antagonist in this film, and now with the trailer that shows Scott’s face all bloodied from battle, a popular fan theory is that Scott Lang will die in this film.

Marvel has shown that they are not afraid to kill off their characters no matter how much fans love them (i.e. Avengers: Engame). Losing Scott would be devastating for fans, however it would also provide more opportunities for characters like Cassie Lang who is being played by Kathryn Newton. In the comics, Cassie joins the Young Avengers under the identity of “Stinger.” The Young Avengershave been hinted at in the MCU since WandaVision released in 2020. It brought the introduction of Wanda’s twins Billy and Tommy, who join the Young Avengers as “Wiccan” and “Speed.” If Scott died, it is possible that Cassie could take on the mantle as the newest bug themed superhero for the Young Avengers.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is set to release on February 17, 2023. Until its release, fans can only speculate what will happen to Scott in his newest film.

MovieS

Black Panther II

By George Cohen
The Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, has grown to legendary status after its epic three part Infinity Saga concluded in 2019 with Avengers: Endgame coming out that year. Since then there has been an influx of TV shows being released since January of 2021 when Marvel’s first Disney + show WandaVision made its debut, as well as the first movie of Phase Four being Black Widow. Now, with the finale of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law being released next Thursday, the MCU fandom has been focusing on a new project; one that’s trailer dropped on Monday, October third.
The sequel to Black Panther, directed by Ryan Coogler, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is to be the newest film addition to the MCU. When Black Panther first came out it became an instant success earning over $1.3 billion at the box office and three Academy Awards, something no film in the MCU had ever done. Black Panther was also critically acclaimed for its cultural impact being the first MCU film to be led by an all Black cast with a Black lead. Now, with the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, audiences are eager for a sequel that will surpass expectations the first film gave them. This film faces additional pressure to do justice to the legacy of Chadwick Boseman who passed away in August of 2020. Boseman played the character of T’Challa; the King of Wakanda who also held the mantle of the Black Panther. Audiences are hoping for a film that will honor Boseman’s legacy while expanding the world of Wakanda through the introduction of an underwater society and the continuation of other characters’ stories such as Shuri, the sister of T’Challa. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, directed by Ryan Coogler, is set to come out November 11.
The MCU shows no sign in slowing down the expansion of its world. As the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever release date creeps closer it begs the question; will this film do justice to the expectations audiences hold?

My favorite comebacks & debuts of 2022

NEW JEANS || Debut EP

NewJeans - The 1st EP: New Jeans (Debut Member / MV Photos) : r/kpop

This one goes without saying, it’s amazing! My personal favorite is Hype Boy. I love the concept they have and how well they portray it. They have amazing choreography that catches your eye, and their voices match the music perfectly. What’s not to love?

TWICE || Between 1 & 2

twice_trans on Twitter:

Talk that Talk is definitely an amazing title track for Twice to add to their collection. It’s cute, it’s catchy, it’s choreography is light and airy, it’s honestly amazing all around. Jihyo’s vocals never fail to impress, that’s for sure. Some people think Twice can do better than this, and I agree completely– But I simply couldn’t downplay this mini album even if I wanted to!

DREAMCATCHER || VISION

VISION - song and lyrics by Dreamcatcher | Spotify

I could ramble for hours about this one, honestly. It sounded a bit different from what their original concept was, but it was still fantastic nonetheless. The music gave Doom: Eternal vibes, and the vocals were what tied it all together.

NXDE- (G)I-DLE

G)I-DLE Shocks Neverlands With New Comeback Artwork 'Nxde' | KpopStarz

I love the meaning behind it, the choreography, the vocals, the concept, everything about this comeback is perfect. Nobody else but (G)I-IDLE could pull this concept off so perfectly. Let’s also give the stylists some credit, because everyone looked absolutely gorgeous!

K-Pop Groups

"How Hybe Entertainment’s Freshest Girl Group “NewJeans” Conquered the Summer K-pop Scene

In recent years, the fourth generation groups of K-pop have cranked out unique concepts, catchy tracks and colossal trends. From Itzy’s Ryujin’s “Wannabe” shoulder dance challenge during the 2020 quarantine to an internet-wide inside joke of Tomorrow X Together’s past debut “Cat + Dog,” the use of social media has only expanded the eccentric generation around the world.
Debatably, 2022 has been a year of both success and criticism among the industry. While many returning acts got praise from fans for their comebacks, listeners were also curious to hear from highly-anticipated new girl groups under their favorite companies. Starting off strong, a collection of competition show Girls Planet 999 finalists kicked off early January 2022 debuting as Kep1er with upbeat pop title track “Wa Da Da.” Later in February, JYP Entertainment released NMIXX, quickly becoming notorious not only for their powerhouse vocals and dancing but also experimental style. Hybe’s sleek, confident and polished LE SSERAFIM dominated the month of May. Among these groups and their immediate attention, however, came another bunch that trail blazed the K-pop world.
NewJeans, releasing their debut EP “New Jeans” mid-July under Hybe Label’s branch ADOR, hit the world with their youthful yet nostalgic feel. All members (Hanni, Minji, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein) were born between 2004 and the youngest even in early 2008. From their school-reminiscent title track “Attention” to catchy, sweet “Hype Boy” and their R'n'B-esque songs “Cookie” and “Hurt,” the young quintet has captured the ears of K-pop fans and mainstream media. But besides Hybe’s representation, what exactly may contribute to their immediate success as rookies?
The first answer may be right underneath our noses. Or above, depending on the cut.
A large contributor to the girl’s viral applause was - in all seriousness - their hair. The term coined by social media defined as “hairography” is now popularly used to describe a dance that utilizes one’s hair as an accessory or prop to accentuate moves, hence the combination of the words “hair” and “choreography.” The whipping, flipping, snapping and twirling motions commonly found in NewJean’s routines do not fail to show off their natural-colored, straight, shiny locks. Even the chorus of “Attention” includes very loud and dynamic choreography that has their hair swaying with every beat. Their young vibe gained them praise, yet it was their healthy tresses that left an unexpected impact on the media.
As much as their hair is beautiful down, the girls often don hair clips, space buns, bubble braids and bangs to accommodate to their well-known Y2K concept. In light of recent trends returning from the era of color and glitter, NewJeans has taken on the fad themselves. Their music videos often reference devices or lifestyles from the 2000s, reaching audiences who both remember the decade and others who wish to recreate or appreciate the style. This may be due to their ages and connection to modern Generation Z, therefore the company building their portfolio as a group around nostalgic feels and teenage fashion. Even their app Phoning, used to communicate with the group themselves, takes on a vintage vibe of their parent’s old phone from the 2000s many may recall adorning with stickers.
From the girl’s lush locks to the Y2K trends they ornate with, NewJeans has taken the K-pop scene head-on and bedazzled the fourth generation with their youthful energy. They are some of the most successful rookies of 2022 and may continue to upkeep their reign in the future with such a strong start.

the year is almost ending, so you should try to encourage yourself to make some changes like a new wardrobe, hairstyle, whatever makes you feel happy. This week is also a great time to focus on your important short term goals, meaning it's a great time to move towards those goals. Something important this week is self- expression. Try to learn more about what makes you you and do some self discovery.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 21- Sagittarius,

be gentle with yourself and take a break. School or work can become really stressful but it's always best to do a self care session to recharge your positive energy and reconnect with yourself.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)- Capricorn,

this is a great time to make new connections and socialize with new people or with people you don't really interact with. It's a great time to make new friends as you’ll make a great first impression. It’s also a great time to reflect on your goals and what you want to achieve before the year ends.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 19)- Aquarius,

there is still time to reach your goals as you are feeling extra ambitious this week. To end 2021 on a high note, you should start making plans and creating new goals.

Pisces (February 20 - March 20)- Pisces,

don't believe in an easy answer and trust your intuition. Try to encourage yourself to dig deeper to the truth on an important topic. This is also a great time to make new bonds either at your job or in any other place that you normally go to.

McMahon

Mcmahon Athletics (10/17 - 10/22)

By Calli Gilchrist

The fall sports season is coming to an end, so athletes, don’t forget to register for the winter season. Available sports include boy’s and girl’s basketball, boy’s and girl’s hockey, indoor track, boy’s swim and dive, and coed wrestling.

Congratulations to athletes of the week; Brandon Van Steen (golf), who shot a team-low of 40 assisting in McMahon’s win over Norwalk High to take home the Courville Cup, and Alivia McDowell (soccer; goalie), who helped bring her team to an undefeated week (10/9-10/14) including a 4-0 win over Norwalk High, defending the Boczer Cup.

Boys Soccer lost to Trumbull last Monday, but came back strong with a 3-1 win against Staples on Thursday. Field hockey had a rough week with two hard losses to New Canaan and Ridgefield, but it’s been a great week for girls’ volleyball, with three wins and no losses last week. They played Danbury, Fairfield Warde, and Norwalk; winning three to zero each time, keeping the Griffith/Kehoe Trophy on our side of town. Girls soccer had a solid tie with Trumbull but had a tough loss to Staples on Friday. Cross Country ran in the FCIACs Championships on Wednesday, and a big congratulations to captains Ashlee Becker who ran a 16:30 4K, and Charles Prescott who ran an 18:48 5K; both athletes took first for McMahon. Football had a great game Friday with a huge 35-33 win over Fairfield Warde.

Congratulations to boy's soccer and girl’s volleyball for making LL States, as well as girl's soccer for making both LL States and FCIACs.

Our voices CLUB!

By: Alexa Lugo, 12th grade

On this week’s segment of Club Corner we are shouting out the Our Voices Club. I personally have joined in on a few meetings and have enjoyed our very serious conversations and debates about topics that affect our society everyday. I think this club is a great way for students to express themselves and their beliefs in a safe environment and here are a few words from their president, Jordyn Powell!
“Our voices club is about debating and discussing current events and news. It is a space for students to discuss their thoughts and opinions on different topics. We currently meet on Wednesdays from 2:20 pm to around 3:30 pm. Our google classroom code is bh3hqno.
In most of our meetings, we are either discussing/debating a topic or voting on possible future discussion topics. The goal of the club is to create an open discussion in cgs for students to voice their beliefs and opinions. I think our club has a quality of variety when it comes to discussion topics. We talk about any and everything from celebrities to laws. There are not any restrictions, and we all vote as a group on what we would like to discuss. I think that is an aspect that makes people want to join our club and its unique quality.”
Make sure you visit them Wednesdays after school and let us know who you want to be featured in our next Club Corner!

Introducing…Candy Grams! 2022

By: Sabrina Arastu

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! With the winter break only weeks away, and so many holidays associated with this time, it’s a perfect time for candy. The CGS Chronicle will be selling Candy Grams! These Candy Grams can be sent to anyone around CGS (but we are asking all students to keep it to CGS ONLY), simply come to the candy gram stand at lunch, and fill out the form to send a gram. We are selling candy canes and holiday cookies on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week and next week, Candy canes for $1, and Cookies for $2.

Keep in mind, these Candy grams can be anonymous, and come with a small paper to send a message to whoever your gram is for. You can send multiple, and (if you really want to) it is allowed to send one to yourself, but you will not get it right away. Happy holidays, and have fun!
