Norwegian and Irish artist Oda Iselin Sønderland creates figurative, dreamlike watercolor paintings from her studio in London. Her work is influenced by her own life experiences in addition to cultural ones. With allusions to folklore and mythological creatures, experiences from a variety of cultures, and even Japanese anime and manga, Sønderland’s work is rich with storytelling. In an interview with Ocula, Sønderland states that while she draws inspiration from folklore, she always tries to make them her own in some form, bringing them to life in a way that reflects human nature. Common threads tie her works together: vibrant blues, purples, and pinks, unique compositions that feature a “picture within a picture”, and stunning natural imagery. Currently, Sønderland hopes to experiment more with three-dimensional artwork, through medias such as wood carving and wax sculpture.

Artist Feature of the Week

Mary Herbert

By Ella Dino
From left to right: Figment (after Maggie Nelson), soft pastel on paper, 14x24cm, 2020. Wait A While Here, soft pastel on paper, 26.5x23cm, 2020. A Mirror, soft pastel on paper, 14x21cm, 2020.

Mary Herbert is a London based contemporary artist who works primarily in soft pastel. Her artwork has a distinctively hazy, luminescent appearance, as though the subjects are in a dreamlike state. These drawings often exhibit one or more of three major themes across her work: streams of consciousness, dreams, and memories. The soft colors and calm atmosphere of the pieces shed light on her own experiences with these topics. The imagery also draws from Mary’s experiences growing up immersed in both the natural settings of her hometown and the art world close by in London, where she studied art at Goldsmiths College.
